the prohibition is directed at the one who utters that statement out of self-admiration, belittling the people and deeming himself above them; this is what is forbidden. As for the person who says it because he sees people falling short in their religious duties, and he says it out of grief for them and for the religion itself, there is no harm in that. This is the explanation given by the scholars in detail; among the prominent imams who have expressed it are Mālik ibn Anas, al-Khattābī, al-Humaydī and others. I have clarified the matter further in my book al-Adhkār.

280 – Chapter: The prohibition of Muslims shunning one another for more than three days, except when the one shunned is an innovator, openly sinful, or the like.

Allah the Exalted says: “The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers.” (Q 49:10)

And He says: “Do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” (Q 5:2)

1599 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not sever relations, do not turn your backs on one another, do not hate one another, and do not envy one another; rather, be servants of Allah, brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days.” Agreed upon.

1600 – Abū Ayyūb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three nights: they meet and this one turns away and that one turns away, and the better of the two is the one who initiates the greeting of peace.” Agreed upon.

1601 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stated, “Deeds are presented every Monday and Thursday, and Allah forgives every person who associates nothing with Him—except the one between whom and his brother there is enmity. Concerning them He says: ‘Leave these two until they reconcile.’” Recorded by Muslim.

1602 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Indeed…”
