Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

would recount it. One morning (1) he said to us, “Last night two visitors came to me. They said, ‘Move on,’ and I went with them. We came upon a man lying flat on his back, and another standing over him with a stone. He would bring the stone down upon the man’s head, smashing it; the stone then rolled away and he would follow it, pick it up, and would not return until the man’s head had been restored as it was. Then he struck him again, exactly as he had done the first time.”

I said to them, “Glory be to Allah! Who are these?” They replied, “Move on, move on,” so we moved on. We came to a man lying on his back (2), and another was standing over him with an iron hook. He would go to one side of his face and rip open his mouth to the back of his neck, his nostril to the back of his neck, and his eye to the back of his neck; then he would turn to the other side and do the same. By the time he had finished with that side, the first side had healed and returned to how it had been, after which he repeated what he had done the first time.

I said, “Glory be to Allah! Who are these?” They said to me, “Move on, move on,” and we moved on until we reached something like a furnace. I think he said, “There was a tumult and loud voices inside it.” We looked in and saw naked men and women, and a flame rose toward them from beneath; whenever it reached them they cried out in a frenzy. I asked, “Who are these?” They said, “Move on, move on,” and we moved on until we came to a river—I think he said it was red like blood. In the river was a man swimming, and on its bank was a man who had gathered many stones. Whenever the swimmer reached the bank, he opened his mouth and the other dropped a stone into it; then he went back and swam again, and each time he returned the man opened his mouth and was given another stone. I asked, “Who are these?” They said, “Move on, move on,” so we moved on until we came to a man whose appearance was revolting—indeed, the most repulsive sight you could ever behold. He had a fire before him which he kept stoking and walking around. I said to them, “What is this?” They answered, “Move on, move on,” and we moved on until we came
