leads to righteousness (1), and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man will keep telling the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a man of high veracity (2). Lying, on the other hand, leads to depravity, and depravity leads to the Fire. A man will keep lying until he is recorded with Allah as an inveterate liar.” Agreed upon.

1551 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “There are four qualities; whoever possesses all of them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever possesses one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up: when entrusted he betrays, when he speaks he lies, when he makes a covenant he breaks it, and when he disputes he exceeds all bounds.” Agreed upon.

Its explanation has already appeared, together with the similar narration of Abū Hurayrah, in the chapter entitled “Keeping One’s Covenants.”

1552 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever fabricates a dream he never saw will be charged on the Day of Resurrection with tying two barley grains together, and he will never be able to do it. Whoever eavesdrops on a people’s conversation while they dislike it will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever fashions an image will be punished and commanded to breathe a soul into it, yet he will never be able to do so.” Related by al-Bukhārī.

‘Taḥallama’ means that a person claims he dreamed in his sleep and says he saw such-and-such, though he is lying. ‘Al-ānak’—with a long vowel on the alif, a ḍamma on the nūn, and a soft kāf—refers to molten lead.

1553 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The gravest fabrication (3) is for a man to claim that his eyes have seen what they have not seen.” Related by al-Bukhārī.

Meaning: he says, “I saw,” regarding something he did not actually see.

1554 – Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would frequently ask his Companions, “Has any one of you had a dream?” and whoever Allah willed would relate it to him

(1) That is, taʿa (obedience). (2) Meaning: he keeps on exhibiting sidq (truthfulness); in Muslim’s wording: “liyataharra al-sidq” (“that he should deliberately seek truthfulness”). (3) The plural of firya (a fabricated lie).
