and said, “They are being punished. They are not being punished for something that people think weighty—yet, indeed, it is weighty. One of them used to walk about spreading namīmah (talebearing), while the other did not shield himself (1) from his own urine.” Agreed upon. This is the wording of one of al-Bukhārī’s narrations.

The scholars explain that the phrase “they are not being punished for something weighty” means: for something they themselves regarded as insignificant; others said it means: the truly weighty matter was their failure to abstain from it.

1546 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Shall I inform you what al-ʿadh is? It is namīmah—carrying people’s statements to one another.” Related by Muslim.

Al-ʿadh: pronounced with a fatḥah on the ʿayn, a quiescent ḍād, and a final hāʾ (pattern of wajh). Another recension has al-ʿiḍah, with a kasrah on the ʿayn and a fatḥah on the ḍād (pattern of ʿiddah), which means lying and slander. According to the first reading, al-ʿadh is a verbal noun; one says ʿaḍdahu ʿadhan, meaning “he accused him of al-ʿadh.”

258 – Chapter: The Prohibition of Relaying Reports and People’s Speech to the Authorities when there is no need, such as fear of harm and the like.

Allah the Exalted says: “And do not help one another in sin and transgression.” (al-Māʾidah 5:2). The aḥādīth relevant to this topic have already been cited in the previous chapter.

1547 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Let none of you convey anything to me about another of my Companions, for I love to come out to you with a heart that is free of rancour.” Related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī (2).

(1) The phrase min al-istitar (“failing to shield oneself”) means that he neither screened himself from people’s sight nor took care to avoid urine. (2) I add: he labeled the report gharib, which signals its weakness; its chain contains an unidentified narrator, as I clarified in Mishkat, no. 4852. –N.

(١) من الاستتار : أي : لا يستتر عن الأعين ، أو لا يتنزه عن البول . (٢) قلت : واستغربه مشيراً لضعفه ، وفي إسناده مجهول كما بينته في « المشكاة » (٤٨٥٢) - ن - .
