Chapter: The prohibition of listening to backbiting
Anyone who hears unlawful backbiting is required to rebut it and censure the one who utters it. If he is unable, or his objection is rejected, he must leave that gathering if he can.
Allah the Exalted says, “When they hear idle talk(2) they turn away from it” (Qur’an 28:55). He also says, “And those who turn away from worthless talk” (Qur’an 23:3); and, “Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—each of these will be called to account” (Qur’an 17:36). And He says, “When you see those who plunge into irreverent talk about Our signs(3), keep away from them until they engage in some other discourse; and if Satan causes you to forget, then do not sit after the reminder with the wrongdoing people” (Qur’an 6:68).

ʿItbān ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) related—in his well-known lengthy account mentioned earlier in the Chapter on Hope—that the Prophet ﷺ once stood to pray and asked, “Where is Mālik ibn al-Dukhshum?” A man replied, “That man is a hypocrite who does not love Allah or His Messenger.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not say that! Do you not see that he says, lā ilāha illā Allah, seeking thereby the Face of Allah? Indeed, Allah has forbidden the Fire to anyone who says lā ilāha illā Allah while seeking thereby the Face of Allah.” Agreed upon.
