16 – The Book of Supplications
250 – Chapter: The command to supplicate, its virtue, and a selection of the Prophet’s ﷺ prayers
Allah the Exalted says: “And your Lord said, ‘Call upon Me and I will answer you.’” (Surah Ghāfir, 60)
He, Exalted is He, also says: “Invoke your Lord with humility and privately; surely He does not love the transgressors.” (Surah al-Aʿrāf, 55)
And He says: “When My servants ask you about Me, I am indeed near. I answer the call of the caller whenever he calls upon Me.” (Surah al-Baqarah, 186)
And He says: “Who is it that answers the desperate one when he calls on Him and removes adversity…?” (Surah al-Naml, 62)
1473 – Al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Supplication is worship.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).
1474 – ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ preferred concise, comprehensive supplications and would leave aside anything else. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good chain.
1475 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The supplication the Prophet ﷺ most frequently made was: “O Allah, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” Agreed upon.
Muslim added in his version: Whenever Anas wished to make a supplication, he would use this one; and whenever he intended to pray for something else, he would include it within this supplication.
