some words that I may recite morning and evening.’ He replied:
“Say: Allahumma Fāṭira al-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ (1), ʿĀlima al-ghaybi wa-sh-shahāda, Rabb-a kulli shayʾin wa Malīkahu. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, and from the evil of Satan and his snare of polytheism (2).”
He then instructed, “Utter these words when you rise in the morning, when you enter the evening, and when you lie down to sleep.”
Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who declared it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (good and sound).
1463 – Ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, said: When the Prophet ﷺ entered the evening he would say:
“We have reached the evening and sovereignty belongs to Allah. Praise is to Allah. There is no god but Allah alone with no partner.”
The narrator added, “I think he also said within it: ‘To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is capable of all things. My Lord, I ask You for the good that lies in this night and the good that follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil that lies in this night and the evil that follows it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the burdens of senility. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.’”
When morning came he would repeat the same, saying: “We have reached the morning and sovereignty belongs to Allah.”
Narrated by Muslim.
1464 – ʿAbdullāh b. Khubayb (with the khāʾ dotted), may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, “Recite: ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’ and the two safeguarding chapters (3) when evening comes and when morning comes, three times; they will suffice you against everything.”
Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
1465 – ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No servant who says every morning and every evening, ‘Bismillāh alladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa ismihi…’”
