Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

good deeds are entered in his record, or a thousand sins are removed from it.” Reported by Muslim.

Al-Humaydi said, “This is how it appears in Muslim’s compilation: ‘or a thousand sins are removed.’” Al-Baraqani added, “Shuʿbah, Abū ʿAwanah, and Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān also transmitted it from Mūsā—the transmitter through whom Muslim narrated it—and they said, ‘and a thousand sins are removed,’ omitting the word ‘or.’ (1)

1440 – Abū Dharr – may Allah be pleased with him – related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Each morning charity is due from every joint of one of you. Every utterance of SubḥānAllāh (Glory be to Allah) is charity, every Al-ḥamdu lillāh (praise be to Allah) is charity, every Lā ilāha illā Allāh (there is no deity but Allah) is charity, every Allāhu akbar (Allah is Most Great) is charity; enjoining what is right is charity, and forbidding what is wrong is charity. What suffices for all of that are two units of prayer that one offers at the forenoon.” Reported by Muslim.

1441 – The Mother of the Believers, Juwayriyyah bint al-Ḥārith – may Allah be pleased with her – reported: The Prophet ﷺ left my house early in the morning after performing the dawn prayer while I was seated in my prayer area. He returned after the sun had risen high and found me still sitting. He asked, “Have you remained in the same state as when I left you?” I answered, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Since leaving you I have repeated four phrases three times. If they were weighed against everything you have said today, they would outweigh them: SubḥānAllāhi wa bi-ḥamdih, ʿadada khalqih, wa riḍā nafsih, wa zinata ʿarshih, wa midāda kalimātih (Glory and praise be to Allah: as numerous as His creation, as much as pleases Him, equal to the weight of His Throne, and equal to the ink needed to record His words).” (2) Reported by Muslim.

(1) I note, however, that Ahmad relates the hadith in his Musnad (1/180) through Yahya—meaning Yahya al-Qattan—with the wording: “aw yuhattu” (“or it is reduced”), exactly as in Muslim’s version. He then remarks: “Ibn Numayr and Ya‘la also said: aw yuhattu,” indicating that al-Qattan’s wording is corroborated by Ibn Numayr and Ya‘la, both reporting from Musa. Ahmad later records their full chain elsewhere (1/185), narrating from Abd Allah b. Numayr and Ya‘la b. Ubayd, from Musa. Al-Tirmidhi (2/258) transmits the report through Yahya with the wording “wa yuhattu” (“and it is reduced”), yet the former wording appears stronger to me because of the corroboration by Ibn Numayr and Ya‘la and because Muslim chose it. In any case, both expressions convey the same meaning; Allah knows best. —N. (2) That is, a quantity equal to their number. “Kalimat Allah” (the words of God) refers to His speech. Ibn al-Athir explains that since it is a divine attribute—and God’s attributes are limitless—the mention of a fixed number is figurative, intended only to stress vastness. Hence Ibn Abidin’s marginal note on the “Kamilah Prayer” prefers the phrase “the number of Allah’s perfection,” so as not to suggest any limitation of His perfection.
