1426 – Abū Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – reported: The poor among the Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Those who possess great wealth have carried off the highest degrees and lasting bliss. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, yet because of the advantage of their riches they perform ḥajj, ʿumrah, strive in Allah’s cause, and give in charity.” He ﷺ said, “Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up with those who have outstripped you, outstrip those who come after you, and none will be better than you except one who does the same as you do?” They replied, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “After every prayer say subḥānallāh (Glory be to Allah), al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise belongs to Allah), and Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times each.” Abū Ṣāliḥ, the narrator from Abū Hurayrah, was asked how these phrases are to be recited; he said, “One says: subḥānallāh, al-ḥamdu lillāh, Allāhu akbar until each of them totals thirty-three.” Agreed upon.
Muslim adds in his narration: The poor Emigrants later returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Our wealthy brothers heard what we have done and they have done the same.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is Allah’s bounty; He grants it to whom He wills.”
“Ad-duthūr” is the plural of dathr (with an open dāl and a silent thāʾ) and means abundant wealth.
1427 – Abū Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – also related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever glorifies Allah after(1) every prayer thirty-three times, praises Allah thirty-three times, and magnifies Allah thirty-three times, and to complete the hundred says: Lā ʾilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulk wa lahu l-ḥamd, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr (There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent), his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.” Narrated by Muslim.
1428 – Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There are follow-ups(2) which the one who says—or does—them after every prescribed prayer will never be disappointed: thirty-three declarations of subḥānallāh, thirty-three declarations of al-ḥamdu lillāh, and thirty-four declarations of Allāhu akbar.” Narrated by Muslim.
