fill—or, he ﷺ said, “they fill”—the space between the heavens and the earth.” Narrated by Muslim.
– Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ – may Allah be pleased with him – reported: A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Teach me some words I can say.” He ﷺ replied, “Say: ‘Lā ʾilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah (There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner), Allāhu akbar kabīran (Allah is the Greatest, immensely so), al-ḥamdu lillāh kathīran (praise belongs to Allah in great abundance), subḥān Allāh Rabb al-ʿālamīn (glory be to Allah, Lord of all realms), wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh al-ʿAzīz al-Ḥakīm (and there is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise).’” The man said, “These words are for my Lord; what is there for me?” He ﷺ answered, “Say: ‘Allāhumma-ghfir lī, warḥamnī, wahdinī, warzuqnī (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me).’” Narrated by Muslim.
– Thawbān – may Allah be pleased with him – related: Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the prayer, he would seek forgiveness three times and then say, “Allāhumma anta s-salām, wa minka s-salām, tabārakta yā dhā l-jalāli wa l-ikrām (O Allah, You are peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honor).” Al-Awzāʿī, one of the transmitters of the hadith, was asked, “How is that seeking of forgiveness voiced?” He replied, “One says: ‘Astaghfirullāh, astaghfirullāh.’” Narrated by Muslim.
– Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer and had given the salām he would say: “Lā ʾilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulk wa lahu l-ḥamd, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr (There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent). Allāhumma lā māniʿa limā aʿṭayt, wa lā muʿṭiya limā manaʿt, wa lā yanfaʿu dhā l-jaddi (1) minka l-jadd (O Allah, none can withhold what You give, nor can anyone give what You withhold; and the fortune of one endowed with fortune will not benefit him against You).” Agreed upon.
– ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr – may Allah be pleased with them both – used to say, after every prayer once he had given the salām: “Lā ʾilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulk wa lahu l-ḥamd, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr (There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent). Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh, lā ʾilāha illā Allāh, wa lā naʿbudu illā iyyāh, lahu n-niʿmatu wa lahu l-faḍlu (2) wa lahu th-thanāʾu l-ḥasan, lā ʾilāha illā Allāh, mukhliṣīna lahu d-dīn walaw kariha l-kāfirūn (There is no power and no strength except through Allah. There is no deity but Allah, and we worship none but Him. His is the favor, His is the bounty, and His is the most excellent praise. There is no deity but Allah; we devote our religion sincerely to Him, even if the disbelievers dislike it).” Ibn al-Zubayr said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite these declarations of tawḥīd after every prayer.” Narrated by Muslim.
