the gathering of Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, may Allah be pleased with him. Bashīr ibn Saʿd said, “O Messenger of Allah, the Exalted has commanded us to invoke blessings upon you; how, then, should we do so?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished he had not asked. Then he ﷺ said, “Say: ‘O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Abraham. And bestow Your favor upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You bestowed Your favor upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious. As for the greeting of peace, say it as you have already learned.’” Reported by Muslim.
1415 – Abu Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī, may Allah be pleased with him, said: They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings upon you?” He replied, “Say: ‘O Allah, bless Muhammad, his wives, and his descendants as You blessed the family of Abraham; and bestow Your favor upon Muhammad, his wives, and his descendants as You bestowed Your favor upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious.’” Agreed upon.
