Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

Al-Bukhārī also narrates it in these words: “We went out to welcome the Messenger of Allah ﷺ together with the children at Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ.”

1356 – Abū Umāmah, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever neither goes out to fight, nor equips a fighter, nor looks after a fighter’s family with good care, Allah will strike him with a calamity (1) before the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.

1357 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Strive against the polytheists with your wealth, your lives, and your tongues.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.

1358 – Abū ʿAmr—some say: Abū Ḥakīm—al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; when he did not fight at the very start of the day, he would delay combat until the sun had passed its zenith, the winds began to blow, and victory descended.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd. Al-Tirmidhī also transmitted it and said, “A good, sound hadith.”

1359 – Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not wish to meet the enemy, but ask Allah for well-being; yet if you do meet them, then stand firm.” Agreed upon.

1360 – From him and from Jābir, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “War is deception (2).” Agreed upon.

(1) It means “the great calamity.” In the chain of this hadith appears Walid ibn Muslim, a known mudallis who related it with an ʿanʿanah; see al-Taʿliq al-Raghib 2/200. From Shaykh Nasir’s wording one might conclude that the report is weak because of Walid’s tadlis, yet this is not the case: Walid explicitly stated “I heard” in the versions recorded by Ibn Majah (2/123) and al-Darimi (2/209), so the objection is removed. Indeed, Shaykh Nasir himself graded the hadith as hasan in Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah (abridged isnad), no. 2231. We were unable to find his comments on it in al-Silsilah al-Sahihah, for he referred to no. 2561, a portion that has not yet been published. (2) Deception in warfare may be achieved through dissimulation, ambushes, and other similar tactics.
