they outstripped the polytheists to Badr, and when the enemy arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Let none of you advance toward anything until I myself am in front of him.” When the polytheists drew near, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Rise toward a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and the earth.” ʿUmayr ibn al-Ḥumām al-Anṣārī, may Allah be pleased with him, asked, “Messenger of Allah, a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and the earth?” He replied, “Yes.” ʿUmayr exclaimed, “Bakh! Bakh!” (1) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “What made you say ‘Bakh! Bakh!’?” He answered, “By Allah, Messenger of Allah, nothing but the hope that I might be among its people.” He ﷺ said, “You are indeed one of its people.” ʿUmayr then took some dates from his quiver, began to eat them, and said, “If I live long enough to finish these dates, that will be too long a life!” He threw away the dates he had with him, fought, and continued fighting until he was killed. Narrated by Muslim.

Al-qarn (with open qāf and rāʾ) is the arrow-quiver.

1324 – Anas also narrated: Some men came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Send with us men who will teach us the Quran and the Sunnah.” He sent with them seventy men from the Helpers who were called “the Reciters.” Among them was my uncle Ḥarām. They would recite the Quran and study it together by night; by day they would fetch water and place it in the mosque, gather firewood, sell it, and buy food with the proceeds for the People of the Veranda and for the poor. The Prophet ﷺ dispatched them, but their enemies lay in wait for them and killed them before they reached their destination. As they were dying they said, “O Allah, convey to our Prophet that we have met You, are pleased with You, and You are pleased with us.” A man then approached Ḥarām, Anas’s uncle, from behind and pierced him through with a spear. Ḥarām exclaimed, “By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, I have triumphed!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Your brothers have been killed, and indeed they said, ‘O Allah, convey to our Prophet that we have met You, are pleased with You, and You are pleased with us.’” Agreed upon, and this is Muslim’s wording.

1325 – Anas further said: My uncle Anas ibn an-Naḍr, may Allah be pleased with him, was absent from the fighting at Badr…
