1314 – Zayd ibn Khālid, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever equips a warrior in the path of Allah has himself taken part in the battle, and whoever (1) looks after a warrior’s family in his absence with goodness has likewise taken part in the battle.” Agreed upon.

1315 – Abū Umāmah, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The best charity is the shade of a tent (2) set up in the path of Allah, the gift of a servant in the path of Allah, or the loan of a stud camel for breeding in the path of Allah.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: a ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).

1316 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, related that a young man from the tribe of Aslam said, “O Messenger of Allah, I wish to join the campaign but I have nothing with which to equip myself.” He replied, “Go to So-and-so; he had outfitted himself but has fallen ill.” The youth went to that man and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ conveys his greeting to you and says: ‘Give me what you had prepared for the campaign.’” The man said, “O So-and-so (addressing his wife), give him what I had prepared, and do not withhold anything from him. By Allah, do not hold back a single thing, for that will bring blessing to you.” Narrated by Muslim.

1317 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an expedition to Banū Liḥyān and said, “Let one man go forth from every two; the reward will be shared between them.” Narrated by Muslim.

In another version he ﷺ said, “Let one man set out from every two.” Then he said to those who remained behind, “Whoever among you looks after the family and property of the one who has gone out, with goodness, will receive a reward equal to half the reward of the one who went.”

1318 – al-Barāʾ, may Allah be pleased with him, said: A man fully covered in iron armor (3) came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, should I fight first or embrace Islam?” He replied, “Embrace Islam, then fight.” The man embraced Islam, then fought and was killed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He did little yet earned a great reward.” Agreed upon.

(1) khalaf—pronounced with a fatha on the kha, a single (non-geminated) lam, and ending with fa—in the phrase “one who stands in for a combatant by treating his family well” means that he attends to all or part of their needs. (2) This is a line of verse. The term at-taruqa (with a fatha followed by a damma) denotes a she-camel that has reached breeding age and is ready to be covered by the male. (3) That is, he is covered with weapons, or he is wearing on his head a bayda, i.e. a helmet.
