in the path of Allah is better than the world and everything in it; a space in Paradise no bigger than the place where one of you lays his whip is better than the world and everything in it; and a single late-afternoon or early-morning march undertaken for the sake of Allah Most High is better than the world and everything in it.” Agreed upon.

1299 – Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Standing guard on the frontier for one day and one night is better than fasting an entire month and spending its nights in prayer. If he dies, the deeds he used to do will continue to be recorded for him, his provision will still be supplied to him, and he will be safe from the Examiner (1).” Narrated by Muslim.

1300 – Fadala ibn ʿUbayd, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Every deceased person has his deeds sealed, except the one who is guarding the frontier in the path of Allah; his deeds continue to grow for him until the Day of Resurrection, and he is protected from the trial of the grave.” Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a sound and good hadith.

1301 – ʿUthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Guarding the frontier for one day in the path of Allah is better than one thousand days spent in any other abode.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a sound and good hadith.

1302 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah has guaranteed for the one who goes out in His path—driven by nothing but jihad in My path, belief in Me, and affirmation of My messengers—that I shall admit him to Paradise, or return him to the home from which he set out with whatever reward he has gained or with booty. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no wound received in the path of Allah will appear on the Day of Resurrection except in the same state it was on the day it was inflicted: its color will be the color of blood, and its scent the scent of musk. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, were it not a hardship for the Muslims, I would never stay behind any detachment (2) that sets out in the path of Allah, but I do not find the means (3) to equip them, and they likewise do not find the means.”

(1) That is, fattan al-qabr (the interrogator of the grave)—may Allah protect us from him. (2) A sariyya is a military detachment, up to four hundred strong, sent against the enemy. (3) Meaning: that which is wide enough for all the other Muslims.

فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا عَلَيْهَا ، وَمَوْضِعُ سَوْطِ أَحَدِكُمْ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا عَلَيْهَا ، وَالرَّوْحَةُ يَرُوحُهَا الْعَبْدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ، أَوِ الْغَدْوَةُ ، خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا عَلَيْهَا » مُتَّفَقٌ عليه . ١٢٩٩ - وعن سَلْمَانَ رضي الله عنه قال : سَمِعْتُ رسول الله ﷺ يقول : « رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صِيَامِ شَهْرٍ وَقِيَامِهِ ، وَإِنْ مَاتَ جَرَى عَلَيْهِ عَمَلُهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَعْمَلُ ، وَأُجْرِيَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ ، وَأَمِنَ الْفَتَّانَ (١) » رواه مسلم . ١٣٠٠ - وعن فضالة بن عبيد رضي الله عنه ، أن رسول الله ﷺ قال : « كُلُّ مَيِّتٍ يُخْتَمُ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ إِلَّا الْمُرَابِطُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ يُنْمِي لَهُ عَمَلَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَيُؤْمِنُ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ » رواه أبو داود ، والترمذي وقال : حديث حسن صحيح . ١٣٠١ - وعن عثمان رضي الله عنه قال : سَمِعْتُ رسول الله ﷺ يقول : « رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ يَوْمٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ مِنَ الْمَنَازِلِ » رواه الترمذي وقال : حديث حسن صحيح . ١٣٠٢ - وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله ﷺ : « تَضَمَّنَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ خَرَجَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ ، لَا يُخْرِجُهُ إِلَّا جِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِي ، وَإِيمَانٌ بِي ، وَتَصْدِيقٌ بِرُسُلِي ، فَهُوَ عَلَيَّ ضَامِنٌ أَنْ أُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ ، أَوْ أُرْجِعَهُ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ الَّذِي خَرَجَ مِنْهُ بِمَا نَالَ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ، أَوْ غَنِيمَةٍ . وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ مَا مِنْ كَلِمٍ يُكْلَمُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، إِلَّا جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ كُلِمَ ؛ لَوْنُهُ لَوْنُ دَمٍ ، وَرِيحُهُ رِيحُ مِسْكٍ . وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ يَشُقَّ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ مَا قَعَدْتُ خِلَافَ سَرِيَّةٍ (٢) تَغْزُو فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا ، وَلَكِنْ لَا أَجِدُ سَعَةً (٣) فَأَحْمِلَهُمْ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ سَعَةً ،

(١) أي : فتان القبر أعاذنا الله منه . (٢) السرية : القطعة من الجيش يبلغ أقصاها أربعمائة تبعث إلى العدو . (٣) أي : ما يسع سائر المسلمين .
