12 – Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in what he narrates from his Lord—Blessed and Exalted is He—said: “Allah has recorded the good deeds and the evil deeds and then clarified them. Whoever intends a good deed but does not carry it out, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, records it with Him as one complete good deed. If he intends it and then performs it, Allah records it as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times as much, and even more in manifold increase. Whoever intends an evil deed but refrains from doing it, Allah, Exalted is He, records it with Him as one complete good deed; but if he intends it and then commits it, Allah records it as only one evil deed.” Agreed upon.

13 – Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Three men from those who lived before you set out on a journey until night obliged them to seek shelter in a cave, so they entered it. A boulder then rolled down from the mountain and sealed the mouth of the cave. They said, ‘Nothing will save you from this rock except that you call upon Allah the Exalted by virtue of your righteous deeds.’

“One of them said: ‘O Allah, I had two elderly parents, and I never offered a drink¹ to my family or my servants before them. One day I went far in search of firewood and did not return² to them until they had fallen asleep. I milked their evening drink for them but found them still sleeping. I disliked waking them, yet I also disliked giving drink before them to my family or my servants. So I remained—cup in hand—awaiting their awakening until dawn broke³, while the children were crying⁴ at my feet. When they awoke, they drank their milk. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, then relieve us of what we are in with respect to this rock.’ The rock moved a little, but they were still unable to get out.

“The second said: ‘O Allah, I had a female cousin who was the dearest of people to me— and in…’”
