Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

1218 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed leadership, some of the Arabs reneged on their faith. ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “How can you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I have been commanded to fight the people until they declare that there is no deity but Allah. Whoever makes that declaration has secured from me his wealth and his life except for its due right, and his reckoning is with Allah’?” Abu Bakr replied, “By Allah, I will surely fight anyone who separates the prayer from the zakah, for the zakah is the rightful due of wealth. By Allah, if they were to withhold from me even a camel-hobble (1) that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would fight them for withholding it.” ʿUmar said, “By Allah, once I saw that Allah had opened Abu Bakr’s heart to fighting, I knew that it was the truth.” Agreed upon.

1219 – Abu Ayyub, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that a man said to the Prophet ﷺ, “Tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise.” He replied, “Worship Allah without associating anything with Him, establish the prayer, give the zakah, and maintain family ties.” Agreed upon.

1220 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that a Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed that, if I do it, will cause me to enter Paradise.” He said, “Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the prayer, pay the obligatory zakah, and fast Ramadan.” The man said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I will add nothing to this.” When he turned away, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever would like to look at a man of Paradise, let him look at this one.” Agreed upon.

1221 – Jarir ibn ʿAbd Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ to establish the prayer, pay the zakah, and give sincere counsel to every Muslim. Agreed upon.

1222 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No owner of gold or silver who fails to pay its due (2) will escape; when the Day of Resurrection comes, it will be beaten into plates for him …”

(1) It means the rope used to hobble a camel. Another recension reads *anaqan* (a she-goat), and—as I have shown in Sahih Abu Dawud, nos. 1391–1393—this is the sounder wording. – N. (2) That is, its zakat.
