for my community, and He granted me another third of my community, so I fell in prostration to my Lord in gratitude. Then I lifted my head, asked my Lord for my community once more, and He granted me the final third, so I fell in prostration to my Lord.” Narrated by Abu Dawud (1).
212 – Chapter: The Excellence of the Night Vigil (qiyam al-layl)
Allah the Exalted says: “And during the night keep vigil with it as an extra act of devotion for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station.” [Al-Isra 17:79]
He also says: “Their sides forsake their beds” (2 [Al-Sajdah 32:16]) to the end of the verse.
And He says: “They used to sleep but little of the night” (3 [Al-Dhariyat 51:17]).
1167 – ʿAishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet ﷺ would stand in prayer at night until his feet cracked (4). I said to him, “Why do you do this, O Messenger of Allah, when Allah has forgiven you your earlier and later sins?” He replied, “Should I not be a grateful servant?” Agreed upon.
1168 – Al-Mughirah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a report to the same effect; agreed upon.
1169 – ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ came to him and to Fatimah at night and said, “Will you not both stand and pray?” Agreed upon.
“Ṭaraqahu” means he came to him at night.
