– Chapter: Performing the two rakʿahs of Fajr lightly, what is to be recited in them, and their time
– ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray two brief rakʿahs between the adhan and the iqamah of the dawn prayer. Agreed upon. In another wording reported by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim: he would pray the two rakʿahs of Fajr so quickly that I would say to myself, “Has he even recited the Mother of the Qurʾān (al-Fātiḥah) in them?” Muslim also narrates: whenever he heard the adhan he would pray the two Fajr rakʿahs and make them short. Another wording states: “when daybreak appeared.”
– Ḥafṣah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the muʾadhdhin called for the dawn prayer and daylight became visible, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray two light rakʿahs. Agreed upon. Muslim adds: When dawn broke, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform nothing except two brief rakʿahs.
– Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray during the night two by two, then conclude with a single rakʿah of witr at the end of the night. He would also pray the two rakʿahs before the dawn prayer, and the adhan(1) would be called in his ears. Agreed upon.
– Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two rakʿahs of Fajr: in the first of them the verse, “Say, ‘We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us …’” — the verse found in al-Baqarah — and in the second, “We believe in Allah; bear witness that we have submitted.”
