– Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was a man from the Ansar—I do not know anyone who lived farther from the mosque than he—yet he never missed a prayer (1). People said to him, “Why do you not buy a donkey so you can ride in the darkness and in the scorching heat (2)?” He replied, “I would not like my house to be right beside the mosque. I want my walking to the mosque to be recorded for me, and likewise my return when I come back to my family.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah has collected all of that reward for you.” Reported by Muslim.
– Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The land around the mosque became vacant, so the clan of Banu Salimah wanted to move nearer to the mosque. When the Prophet ﷺ heard of this he said, “I have been informed that you wish to move closer to the mosque?” They replied, “Yes, Messenger of Allah, we have indeed considered it.” He said, “Banu Salimah, stay in your dwellings; your footprints are recorded. Stay in your dwellings; your footprints are recorded.” They said, “We would not exchange our present homes for anything.” Reported by Muslim; al-Bukhari transmitted the same meaning through the narration of Anas.
– Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The people with the greatest reward for prayer are those who have the farthest distance to walk to it, and then those who are next farther. And the one who waits for the prayer so that he prays it with the imam receives a greater reward than the one who prays it and then goes to sleep.” Agreed upon.
– Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosques in the darkness of perfect light on the Day of Resurrection.” Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi.
– Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I not tell you of what Allah uses to erase sins and raise ranks?” They replied, “Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Perfecting ablution despite hardship, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for one prayer after another. That is the ribat (steadfast vigil), that is the ribat.” Reported by Muslim.
