187 – Chapter: The Excellence of the Prayers

Allah the Exalted says: “Indeed, prayer keeps one away from indecency and wrongdoing” (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:45).

1049 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Tell me: if there were a river at the door of one of you in which he bathed five times every day, would any dirt remain on him?” (1) They replied, “No dirt at all would remain.” He said, “That is the likeness of the five daily prayers; through them Allah wipes away sins.” Agreed upon.

1050 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The example of the five daily prayers is like a deep, flowing river at the door of one of you in which he bathes five times every day.” Reported by Muslim.

The word ghamr—spelled with the letter ghayn—means “abundant.”

1051 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) related that a man once kissed a woman. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of it, whereupon Allah the Exalted revealed: “Establish prayer at the two ends of the day (2) and in the early part of the night; indeed, good deeds erase misdeeds.” The man asked, “Is this for me alone?” He replied, “For my entire community—all of them.” Agreed upon.

1052 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The prayers …”

(1) The word daran denotes dirt or filth. (2) That is, it points to the subh (dawn) and ‘asr (afternoon)—or the zuhr (noon) prayer. The phrase “zulafan mina al-layl” (some portions of the night) is understood to mean the ‘isha prayer, or both maghrib and ‘isha. The verse cited is from Surah Hud (11:114).
