Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

182 – Chapter: The recommendation to beautify one’s voice when reciting the Quran, to request a recitation from one who has a pleasant voice, and to listen attentively to it.

1011 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Allah has not listened to anything as He listens to a prophet who has a pleasant voice chanting the Quran aloud.” Agreed upon.
The phrase “Allah has listened” means: He has paid heed, which is an indication of His pleasure and acceptance.

1012 – Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “You have indeed been given a flute from among the flutes of the family of David (1).” Agreed upon.
In another narration in Muslim the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “If only you had seen me while I was listening to your recitation (2) last night (3).”

1013 – Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ recite, in the night prayer, “By the Fig and the Olive,” and I have never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice than his. Agreed upon.

1014 – Abū Lubābah Bushayr ibn ʿAbd al-Munḏir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever does not chant the Quran is not one of us.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
The verb “yataghannā” means: to beautify one’s voice when reciting the Quran.

1015 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said to me, “Recite the Quran to me.” I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite it to you when it was revealed to you?” He said, “I like to hear it from someone else.” So I recited Sūrat al-Nisāʾ until I came to this verse:

(1) An allusion to the melodious voice granted to Prophet David and his family.
(2) Your recitation.
(3) The previous night.

(1) That is, David himself. (2) That is, it delighted you. (3) In another wording recorded by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) Abu Musa added, “Had I known you were there, I would have embellished it for you even more.” –N–. The hadith is indeed in Bukhari and Muslim, as Imam Nawawi observed, but this additional sentence is not in their versions; it is found in the collections of Abu Ya‘la, Ibn Saʿd, and al-Ruyani, according to Hafiz Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari 9/93.
