Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

for a woman(1) who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel the distance of a day and a night unless she is accompanied by a mahram.” Agreed upon.

997 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “No man must ever be alone with a woman unless she is accompanied by a mahram, and a woman must not travel except with a mahram.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, my wife has gone out to perform Hajj while I have enlisted in such-and-such expedition.” He ﷺ said, “Go and perform Hajj with your wife.” Agreed upon.

(1) That is, it is impermissible—even for the hajj—because the wording of the text is unrestricted, and this is confirmed by the succeeding hadith.

(١) أي : لا يجوز ، ولو إلى الحج لعموم النص وللحديث الذي بعده .
