169 – Chapter: Lending Help to One’s Companion
Many reports on this topic have already been cited, such as the ḥadith, “Allah is in the servant’s aid for as long as the servant is in his brother’s aid” (1), and the ḥadith, “Every act of kindness is charity” (2), and others of similar purport.
976 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: While we were on a journey a man came riding his mount and kept glancing right and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever has with him an extra mount (3) should share it with someone who has no mount, and whoever has surplus provisions should share them with the one who has none.” He went on to mention other kinds of wealth until we came to think that none of us had any right to keep anything surplus. Reported by Muslim.
977 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to set out on an expedition and declared, “O Emigrants and Helpers! Among your brothers are men who possess neither wealth nor clan. Let each one of you take two or three of them with him, for none of us has a mount to carry him except in turns, one turn after another (4).” Jābir said, “So I took with me two—or perhaps three—men, even though I myself had no more than a single turn like any one of them on my camel.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd.
978 – He also said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stay at the rear of the marching column; he would urge on the weak, seat them behind him (5), and pray for them. Reported by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
