of beasts and the night-time refuge of creeping creatures.” Reported by Muslim.
The meaning of the Prophet’s words, “Give the camels their share of the ground,” is: be gentle with them on the march so that they can graze while they walk. His phrase “naqīhā” is read with a kasrah on the nūn, a sukūn on the qāf, and a yāʼ (نِقْيَهَا); it refers to the marrow. The sense is: press on briskly so that you reach the destination before their “marrow” is wasted by the strain of travel. As for taʿrīs, it means to halt and encamp at night.
970 – Abū Qatādah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey and stopped for the night, if the halt was during the early part of the night he would lie on his right side; but if he halted shortly before dawn, he would prop up his arm and rest his head on his palm. Reported by Muslim.
The scholars said: He propped up his arm so that he would not fall into a deep sleep and thereby miss the dawn prayer altogether, or at least miss its first time.
971 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Travel in the dark hours of the night, for the earth is folded up at night.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
“Ad-duljah” means travelling by night.
972 – Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the people alighted at a campsite, they would scatter through the mountain passes(1) and the valleys. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Your dispersing in these passes and valleys is only from Satan!” After that they never encamped without gathering close to one another. Reported by Abū Dāwūd with a ḥasan isnād.
973 – Sahl ibn ʿAmr—some said Sahl ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn ʿAmr al-Anṣārī, known as Ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah and one of those who pledged at al-Riḍwān—may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed
