961 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khuḍrī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, the men have carried off all of your teaching; set aside for us a day of your own so that we may come to you and learn from what Allah has taught you.” He said, “Gather on such-and-such a day.” They gathered, and the Prophet ﷺ came to them and taught them from what Allah had taught him. Then he said, “No woman among you who loses three children will find them to be anything but a screen for her from the Fire.” A woman asked, “And if it is two?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “And two.” Agreed upon.
165 – Chapter: Weeping and fear when passing by the graves of the wrongdoers and the sites of their destruction; manifesting one’s need of Allah Most High and warning against heedlessness in this matter
962 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions reached al-Ḥijr (1) – the homeland of Thamūd – he said, “Do not enter upon these people who were punished unless you are weeping; if you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest what befell them befall you.” Agreed upon.
In another wording: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by al-Ḥijr he said, “Do not enter the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, lest what struck them strike you, unless you are weeping.” He then covered his head (2) and hastened on until he had crossed the valley.
(1) Al-Ḥijr: the rocky valley that contained the dwellings of the people of Thamūd, located on the ancient route from the Ḥijāz to Syria.
(2) “Covered his head” here means that he lowered or drew his garment over his head out of humility and fear.
