Chapter 162 – Giving charity on behalf of the deceased and praying for him (1)

Allah the Exalted says: “And those who came after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.’” (Al-Hashr 59:10)

955 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: A man said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My mother’s soul was taken suddenly, and I think that had she been able to speak she would have given charity. Will she have a reward if I give charity on her behalf?” He replied, “Yes.” Agreed upon.

956 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When a human being dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: a continual charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.” Narrated by Muslim.

Chapter 163 – People’s commendation of the deceased

957 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They passed by a funeral and spoke well of the deceased, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “It has become obligatory.” They then passed by another funeral and spoke ill of the deceased, and he said, “It has become obligatory.” ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “What has become obligatory?” He replied, “The one you praised with good—Paradise has become his due; the one you spoke ill of—Hell has become his due. You are Allah’s witnesses on earth.” Agreed upon.

(1) I say: The two hadiths quoted beneath this point contain absolutely nothing—neither explicitly nor implicitly—except the case of a child’s sadaqa (charity) on behalf of a parent, and on this there is no disagreement. Charity from anyone other than the child, however, is not shown by the texts to reach or benefit the deceased. For a fuller discussion see Ahkam al-Janaiz, p. 177, and Tafsir al-Manar, vol. 8, p. 254, line 20 (N). (2) That is: she had died. The phrase “wa araha” means “I think so.”
