and make his grave spacious and full of light.” Reported by Muslim.
152 – Chapter: What should be said in the presence of the deceased, and what the bereaved should say
925 – Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “When you are present with a sick person or a dying person, then speak good words, for the angels say ʾĀmīn to what you utter.” (1) She added, “When Abū Salamah died, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, Abū Salamah has passed away.’ He replied, ‘Say: Allāhumma-’ghfir-lī wa-lahu, wa-ʾaʿqibnī minhu ʿuqbā ḥasanah (O Allah, forgive me and him, and grant me in his stead a good outcome).’ I said it, and Allah granted me someone better than him: Muhammad ﷺ.”
Muslim transmitted it with the wording, “When you are present with the sick person, or the dying person,” expressing uncertainty; Abū Dāwūd and others narrated it without uncertainty: “the dying person.”
926 – She also said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “No servant is afflicted with a calamity and then says, ‘Innā lillāhi wa-innā ilayhi rājiʿūn (Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return). Allāhumma ʾjurnī fī muṣībatī wa-ʾkhluf lī khayran minhā (O Allah, reward me for my calamity and grant me something better in exchange),’ except that Allah, Exalted is He, will reward him for his calamity and give him better in exchange.” She continued, “When Abū Salamah died I repeated what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed me, and Allah gave me something better than him: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Reported by Muslim.
927 – Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When a servant’s child dies, Allah the Exalted says to His angels, ‘Have you taken the child of My servant?’ They reply, ‘Yes.’ He says, ‘Have you taken the apple of his eye?’ (3) They reply, ‘Yes.’ He says, ‘What did My servant say?’ They reply, ‘He praised You and recited the formula of return (istirjāʿ).’ Allah the Exalted then says, ‘Build for My servant a house in Paradise and name it the House of Praise.’” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A fair (ḥasan) hadith.” (4)
