Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

920 – Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me while I was suffering from an illness that had become very severe. I said, “My condition has reached the state you can see, and I own considerable wealth, yet my only heir is my daughter…” — and he related the remainder of the ḥadīth. Agreed upon.

921 – Al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad reported that ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) once exclaimed, “Oh, my head!” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “No, it is I who say, ‘Oh, my head!’” and he went on to mention the rest of the ḥadīth. Reported by al-Bukhārī.

150 – Chapter: Prompting the dying person to say lā ilāha illā Allah (There is no god but Allah)

922 – Muʿādh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Whoever’s last words are ‘There is no god but Allah’ will enter Paradise.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Ḥākim, who said its chain is sound.

923 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Prompt your dying ones to say ‘There is no god but Allah.’” Reported by Muslim (1).

151 – Chapter: What is to be said after closing the eyes of the deceased

924 – Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Abū Salamah when his gaze had become fixed; he closed his eyes for him and then said, “When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it.” Some of his family raised their voices (2), whereupon he said, “Do not invoke anything over yourselves except good, for the angels say ‘Āmīn’ to whatever you utter.” He then supplicated: “O Allah, forgive Abū Salamah, raise his rank among the rightly guided (3), appoint a successor (4) for him among those he leaves behind, and forgive us and him, O Lord of all worlds.”

(1) I note that it is likewise reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah; see 3/37 – N. (2) That is, they wept aloud. (3) Meaning: those whom Allah guided by Islam and by the hijrah to the noblest of mankind. (4) Meaning: “be a successor for him among his descendants (aqib), that is, among those who come after him among the remaining generations (al-ghabirin).”
