and the man said: “Peace be upon you; may I come in?” The Prophet ﷺ then granted him permission, and he entered. Reported by Abū Dāwūd with an authentic chain.

878 – Kaladah ibn al-Hanbal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and entered without giving salām. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Go back and say: ‘Peace be upon you; may I come in?’” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan.

141 – Chapter: Clarifying that the sunnah, when the visitor is asked “Who are you?”, is for him to state his name or teknonym by which he is known, and that it is disliked to say “It is I” or the like.

879 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated in his famous account of the Night Journey that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Then Gabriel ascended with me to the lowest heaven and requested that it be opened. It was said, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad.’ Then he ascended to the second heaven and requested that it be opened. It was said, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad,’” and the same occurred at the third, fourth, and every subsequent heaven; at the gate of each heaven it is asked, “Who is this?” and he answers, “Gabriel.” Agreed upon.

880 – Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went out one night and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walking alone. I began to walk in the moonlight’s shadow, and he turned and saw me and said, “Who is this?” I replied, “Abū Dharr.” Agreed upon.

881 – Umm Hānī (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was bathing and Fāṭimah was shielding him. He said, “Who is this?” I said, “I am Umm Hānī.” Agreed upon.

882 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and knocked at the door, and he said:
