851 – Abu ʿUmārah al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to do seven things: to visit the sick, to follow funeral processions, to respond to a sneezer, to support the weak, to help the oppressed, to spread the salām, and to honor the oath of one who swears it.” Agreed upon; this is the wording of one of al-Bukhārī’s narrations (1).
852 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You will not enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I show you something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salām among yourselves.” Related by Muslim.
853 – Abu Yūsuf ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “People! Spread salām, offer food, maintain family ties, and pray at night while others sleep—you will enter Paradise in peace.” Transmitted by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (good and sound).”
854 – Al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Kaʿb related that he used to accompany ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar to the market. He said, “Whenever we went to the marketplace, ʿAbd Allāh would not pass by a peddler (2), a shopkeeper, a beggar, or anyone at all without greeting him with salām. One day I came to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar and he asked me to go with him to the market. I said to him, ‘What do you do in the market? You never pause at the stalls, never ask about prices, never bargain, and never sit in the gatherings there. Come, sit with us here and let us talk instead.’ He replied, ‘O Abā Baṭn’—for al-Tufayl had a large belly—‘we go out only for the salām, greeting everyone we meet.’” Narrated by Mālik in the Muwaṭṭaʾ with an authentic chain.
