799 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Trailing one’s garment applies to the lower garment (izār), the shirt, and the turban. Whoever lets anything hang out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī with a sound chain of transmission.
800 – Abū Jurayy Jābir ibn Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw a man whose opinion everyone followed; they would not speak until he had spoken. I asked, “Who is this?” They answered, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said, “ʿAlayka al-salām, O Messenger of Allah”—twice. He replied, “Do not say ʿalayka al-salām; ʿalayka al-salām is the greeting of the dead. Say, ‘al-salāmu ʿalayka.’” I asked, “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “I am the Messenger of Allah: if a hardship afflicts you and you call upon Him, He removes it; if a year of drought (1) strikes you and you call upon Him, He causes your land to grow again; and if you are in a barren desert or open waste, lose your mount, and call upon Him, He returns it to you.”
I said, “Give me advice (2).” He replied: “Do not abuse anyone.” After that I never abused a free man, a slave, a camel, or a sheep. He added: “Do not regard any act of kindness as insignificant—even speaking to your brother with a cheerful face is an act of kindness. Raise your izār to mid-calf; if you cannot, then to the ankles. Beware of letting the izār trail, for that is arrogance (3), and Allah does not love arrogance. If someone reviles you or shames you with something he knows about you, do not shame him with what you know about him, for the burden of that will rest upon him.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī with a sound chain; al-Tirmidhī said, “A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
801 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While a man was praying with his izār trailing, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Go and perform wuḍūʾ.” He went, performed ablution, and returned. The Prophet ﷺ again said, “Go and perform wuḍūʾ.” A man thereupon asked, “Messenger of Allah, why did you order him to perform ablution and then say nothing further to him?”
