noble, and He has not made me an overbearing, obstinate tyrant (1). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “Eat from its outer edges and leave its top; blessing will descend upon it.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd with a good isnād. The word “its top” (dhirwatuhā) refers to the highest part of the food; the dhāl may be read with either a kasrah or a ḍamma.
108 – Chapter: The dislike of eating while reclining
750 – Abū Juḥayfah Wahb ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “I do not eat while reclining.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
Al-Khattābī said: Here “reclining” refers to someone who sits leaning on a cushion placed beneath him (2). He meant that the Prophet ﷺ would not sit on mats and pillows the way a person intending to gorge himself does; rather, he sat alert, not sprawling, and ate only what would suffice him (3). This is al-Khattābī’s wording, while others have indicated that “reclining” means lying on one’s side. Allah knows best.
751 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in the iqʿāʾ posture, eating dates.” Narrated by Muslim.
“Al-muqʿī” is one who places his buttocks on the ground while raising his shins.
