104 – Chapter: Eating from the portion nearest to oneself, and admonishing and correcting the one who eats improperly
744 – ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was a young boy under the care (1) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my hand used to roam about the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, “Young man! Pronounce the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.” Agreed upon.
His phrase “my hand used to roam (taṭīshu)”—with a kasrah on the ṭāʾ and followed by a yāʾ—means it moved around and reached toward the various sides of the platter.
745 – Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man was eating in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his left hand. He said, “Eat with your right hand.” The man replied, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able!” Nothing prevented him except pride, and after that he was never able to raise it to his mouth. Related by Muslim.
105 – Chapter: The Prohibition of qirān—placing two dates (or the like) together in one bite—when several people are eating, unless one’s companions give permission
746 – Jabilah ibn Suḥaym said: A year of famine struck us while we were with Ibn al-Zubayr, and we were provided with dates. ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would pass by while we were eating and say, “Do not practice qirān, for the Prophet ﷺ forbade qirān (2),” and he would add, “unless a person first asks his brother’s permission.” Agreed upon.
(1) Lit. “in the lap”; meaning under his guardianship and care.
(2) Qirān: joining two dates—or two of any similar food—between one’s fingers and eating them together, thereby taking more than one’s share.
