2 – Book of the Etiquette of Eating
100 – Chapter: Saying the name of Allah at the beginning and praising Him at the end
732 – ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, “Mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.” Agreed upon.
733 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When any one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah Most High. If he forgets to do so at the start, let him say: Bismillah awwalahu wa ākhirahu (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end).” Related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (good and authentic).
734 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “When a man enters his house and remembers Allah Most High upon entering and when eating, Satan says to his companions, ‘You have neither lodging nor supper here.’ But if he enters without mentioning Allah Most High, Satan says, ‘You have found lodging,’ and if he does not remember Allah Most High over his food, Satan says, ‘You have found both lodging and dinner.’” Narrated by Muslim.
735 – Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whenever we were present at a meal with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we would not reach out with our hands until he began and placed his hand on the food. On one occasion we were eating with him when a young girl came—almost as if she were being pushed—and was about to put her hand in the food. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught her hand. Then a Bedouin came, as though he too were being pushed, and he caught his hand as well. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “Satan deems it lawful to partake of food over which the name of Allah Most High has not been mentioned.”
