Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

He said, “Let him in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” So I went back to ʿUmar and said, “Come in, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives you the glad tidings of Paradise.” He entered and sat on the curb of the well to the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, letting his legs dangle in the water.

I returned and sat down again, saying, “If Allah intends good for so-and-so”—meaning my brother—“He will bring him.” A man then came and moved the door. I asked, “Who is this?” He replied, “ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān.” I said, “Stay where you are.” I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He said, “Let him in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise, but a trial will befall him.” I went back and said, “Enter, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives you the glad tidings of Paradise along with a trial that will befall you.” He entered and found the curb already full, so he sat facing them on the opposite side.

Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib said, “I interpreted that to refer to their graves.” Agreed upon.

Another version adds: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed me to guard the door,” and it states that when ʿUthmān received the glad tidings he praised Allah Most High and then said, “Allah’s help is sought.”

As for the word wajjah—with a fatḥah on the wāw and a doubled jīm—it means “he turned.” Biʾr Arīs is spelled with a hamzah, a rāʾ, a silent yāʾ, and a plain sīn; some decline the name, while others treat it as indeclinable. Al-quff, with a ḍammah on the qāf and a doubled fāʾ, is the wall built around a well. The phrase ʿalā rislik is commonly read with a kasrah on the rāʾ—though some read it with a fatḥah—and means “take it easy.”

715 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were sitting around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with us were Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) among a group of people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose from our midst (1) and was gone for some time; we feared that something might cut him off from us, and we were alarmed. I was the first to panic, so I went out in search of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I came to a garden of the Anṣār belonging to the Banū al-Najjār. I walked all around it looking for a gate, but found none. Then I noticed a small stream flowing into the garden from a well outside—it was a narrow channel—so I dug a hole, crawled through it, and came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

(1) That is, between us.
