the prayer has been established, do not come to it running; rather, come to it walking and maintain tranquillity. Offer whatever part you catch, and complete whatever you miss.” Agreed upon.
Muslim adds in one version: “For when one of you is intentionally proceeding (1) to the prayer, he is already in a state of prayer.”
710 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that he set off from ʿArafah with the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ heard behind him harsh prodding, beating, and the clamour of the camels. He gestured toward them with his whip and said, “People, keep your composure, for al-birr (obedience) is not attained by hasty trotting.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī, and Muslim transmits part of it.
“al-birr” means obedience, and “al-īḍāʿ”—with a dotted ḍād preceded by a yāʾ and a hamzah with kasrah—refers to moving quickly.
94 – Chapter on Honouring the Guest
Allah the Exalted says:
“Has there come to you the story of Abraham’s honoured guests? When they entered upon him and said, ‘Peace,’ he replied, ‘Peace—people unknown to me.’ (2) Then he slipped away to his household, brought a fat calf, and placed it before them, saying, ‘Will you not eat?’” [51:24-27]
And He says:
“His people came rushing (3) to him, while before that they had been committing evil deeds. He said, ‘My people, these are my daughters; (4) they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me with regard to my guests. Is there not among you a man of sound judgment?’” [11:78]
