696 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ told me, “If the revenue from Bahrain arrives, I will give you this, and this, and this.”(1) The money from Bahrain did not arrive until after the Prophet ﷺ had passed away.(2) When it did come, Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that a public announcement be made: “Whoever has a promise or a debt outstanding with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should come to us.” I went to him and said, “The Prophet ﷺ promised me such-and-such.” He scooped out a handful for me; when I counted it, it came to five hundred. Then he said, “Take twice that amount.” Agreed upon.

Allah the Exalted says: “Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people(3) until they change what is within themselves.” ⦗Ar-Raʿd 13:11⦘; and He says: “And do not be like the woman who, after she had spun it strongly, unravelled her thread into scattered fibres.”(4) ⦗An-Naḥl 16:92⦘.

‘Al-ankāth’ is the plural of ‘nikṯh’; it refers to yarn that has been unravelled after being spun.

And He says: “And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before; a long period then passed over them, and their hearts grew hard.”(5) ⦗Al-Ḥadīd 57:16⦘; and He says: “Yet they did not observe it with the care it deserved.” ⦗Al-Ḥadīd 57:27⦘.
