Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

—may Allah be pleased with him—but he never came back to me with any answer! I was more upset with him than I had been with ʿUthmān, and I waited several nights. Then the Prophet ﷺ proposed for her, and I married her to him. Afterwards Abū Bakr met me and said, “Perhaps you were displeased with me when you offered Ḥafṣah to me and I gave you no reply?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Nothing kept me from answering you about what you proposed except that I already knew the Prophet ﷺ had mentioned her. I would never disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and had the Prophet ﷺ declined her, I would have accepted her.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it.

‘Taʾayyamāt’ means she was left without a husband—her husband had died, may Allah be pleased with him.
‘Wajadta’ means, “you were angry.”

692 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The wives of the Prophet ﷺ were with him when Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came in, walking exactly as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to walk. When he saw her, he welcomed her, saying, “Welcome, my daughter,” and he seated her to his right or to his left. Then he spoke to her in private, and she burst into heavy weeping. When he saw her distress he spoke to her privately a second time, and she laughed. I said to her, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ singled you out from among his wives for a secret, and yet you are crying!” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose, I asked her, “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you?” She replied, “I would never disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away I said to her, “I adjure you (1), by the right I have over you, to tell me what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you.” She said, “Now, yes. As for the first time he spoke to me in private, he told me: ‘Gabriel reviews the Quran with me once every year—or twice—and this year he has reviewed it with me twice. I do not see my term except that it is near. So fear Allah and be patient, for I am the best predecessor for you.’ I wept as you saw. When he saw my grief he confided in me a second time and said, ‘O Fāṭimah, are you not pleased that you will be…’”

(1) That is, “I adjure you.” (2) That is, he would review with him all that had been revealed of the Quran. Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) notes that the verb form expresses reciprocal action, as though each of the two would sometimes recite while the other listened.
