Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

682 – Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You will vie for positions of leadership, yet they will bring remorse on the Day of Resurrection.” Reported by al-Bukhari.

82 – Chapter: Urging the ruler, judge, and all other officials to appoint a righteous advisor, and warning them against evil companions and heeding their counsel

Allah the Exalted says: “Close friends on that Day will be enemies to one another, except for the God-fearing.” (al-Zukhruf 43:67)

683 – Abu Saʿīd and Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah has never sent a prophet nor installed a caliph without assigning to him two retinues: one retinue that commands him to do good and urges him toward it, and another that commands him to do evil and urges him toward it. The one kept safe is he whom Allah keeps safe.” (1) Reported by al-Bukhari.

684 – ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated, “When Allah intends good for a ruler, He appoints for him an honest minister: if the ruler forgets, the minister reminds him, and if he remembers, the minister supports him. But when Allah intends otherwise for him, He appoints for him a corrupt minister: if the ruler forgets, he is not reminded, and if he remembers, he is not assisted.” (2) Reported by Abu Dawud with a sound chain that meets the criteria of Muslim.

(1) Al-bitanah (pronounced with a kasrah on the initial b) denotes close confidants and trusted intimates. The verb taḥuḍḍuhu, with a fatḥah on the initial ta, a ḍammah on the ḥa, and a doubled ḍad, means “to urge or impel him.” (2) The omitted word is “evil.” The text avoids naming it outright to encourage its avoidance: if even mentioning its name is shunned for its repulsiveness, then abstaining from the evil itself is even more imperative.
