“Rejecting the truth” means repelling it and refusing to accept it from the one who states it, whereas “belittling people” means treating them with contempt.

618 – Salama ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) related: A man once ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his left hand. He said to him, “Eat with your right hand.” The man replied, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able.” Nothing prevented him from doing so except arrogance. Salama added: After that he was never able to raise his hand to his mouth. Narrated by Muslim.

619 – Hāritha ibn Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Shall I inform you about the inhabitants of Hell? Every harsh, coarse, self-important swaggerer.” Agreed upon, and its explanation has preceded in the chapter “The Weak among the Muslims.” (1)

620 – Abū Saʿīd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Paradise and Hell disputed. Hell said, “I hold the tyrants and the arrogant,” while Paradise said, “I hold the weak and the poor.” Allah then judged between them: “You, Paradise, are My mercy—through you I show mercy to whom I will; and you, Hell, are My punishment—through you I punish whom I will. It is incumbent upon Me that each of you be filled.” Narrated by Muslim.

621 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “On the Day of Resurrection Allah will not look at the one who drags his lower garment out of pride.” Agreed upon.

622 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Three people Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify, nor even look at, and they will suffer a painful punishment: an old adulterer, a lying ruler, and a poor man who is arrogant.” Narrated by Muslim.

“The poor man” (al-ʿāʾil) means one who is destitute.

623 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Might is My lower garment…’”
