be outrun—or was scarcely ever outpaced. Then a Bedouin arrived on his own young camel and outran her. This upset the Muslims, and when he noticed it he said, “It is incumbent upon Allah that nothing in this world rises high except that He brings it down.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
72 – Chapter: The Prohibition of Arrogance and Self-Admiration
Allah the Exalted says: “That Home of the Hereafter We shall assign to those who do not desire exaltation upon the earth nor corruption, and the outcome belongs to the God-fearing.” (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:83)
He also says: “Do not walk upon the earth exultantly.” (al-Isrāʾ 17:37)
And He says: “Do not turn your cheek disdainfully toward people, nor walk upon the earth exultantly; indeed Allah does not love every swaggering boaster.” (Luqmān 31:18)
The phrase “tusaʿir khaddaka li’n-nās” means to incline your cheek and turn away from people out of haughtiness toward them, while “al-maraḥ” denotes swagger.
Allah the Most High also says: “Indeed, Qārūn was from the people of Moses, yet he tyrannised them. We gave him treasures whose keys would surely weigh down a company of strong men. His people said to him, ‘Do not exult; indeed Allah does not love those who exult’” (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:76) (1) — up to His words: “So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling,” and the subsequent verses.
617 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No one who has even an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man asked, “A person likes to have fine clothes and fine shoes—does that count?” He replied, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people.” (2) Narrated by Muslim.
