Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

and He, the Exalted, also says:

“No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die.” (Luqmān 31:34)

“And when their appointed term arrives, they can neither delay it for an hour nor advance it.” (al-Naḥl 16:61)

“O you who believe, let neither your wealth nor your children distract you from remembering Allah. Whoever does so, it is they who are the losers. Spend of what We have provided you before death comes to one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if only You would delay me for a short while so that I might give in charity and be among the righteous.’ Yet Allah will never delay a soul when its appointed term has come, and Allah is fully aware of what you do.” (al-Munāfiqūn 63:9–11)

“Until, when death comes to any one of them, he says, ‘My Lord, send me back, so that I may do righteousness regarding what I left behind.’ No! It is only a word he utters, and behind them lies a barzakh (1) until the Day they are resurrected. Then, when the Horn is blown, no ties of kinship will remain between them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. Those whose scales are heavy—it is they who are successful. But those whose scales are light—it is they who have ruined themselves; in Hell they will abide. The Fire will sear their faces (2) and there they will grimace. [It will be said:] ‘Were My revelations not recited to you, yet you used to deny them?’ … ‘How many years did you stay on earth, counting its years?’ They will say, ‘We stayed a day, or part of a day; ask those who keep count.’ He will say, ‘You stayed only a little—if you only knew. Did you think that We created you without purpose (3) and that you would not be returned to Us?’ ” (al-Mu’minūn 23:99–115)

“Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should humble themselves to the remembrance of Allah and to the truth that has come down, and that they not be like those who were given the Scripture before? A long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened, and many of them are defiantly disobedient.” (al-Ḥadīd 57:16)

There are many other well-known verses on this subject.

579 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me by the shoulders and said, “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller on the road.”

(1) In other words, a barrier that prevents them from returning. (2) That is, it burns them. (The phrase wahum fiha kalihun, “while they are grimacing in it”) means they are sullen. (3) Meaning: engaging in pointless idle play, without benefit.
