576 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated, “No ḥasad (envy that aspires without wishing the blessing removed) is allowable except in two cases: a man to whom Allah has given wealth and empowered him to expend it completely in what is right, and a man to whom Allah has granted wisdom, by which he judges and which he teaches.” Agreed upon. Its explanation appeared a short while ago.
577 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “No ḥasad is allowable except in two cases: a man to whom Allah has given the Qur’an, so he stands with it during the ānāʾ (hours) of the night and the day; and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, which he spends during the ānāʾ of the night and the day.” Agreed upon.
“Ānāʾ” means “hours.”
578 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The poor among the Muḥājirīn (Emigrants) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “The people of duthūr (abundant wealth) have taken all the highest ranks and lasting bliss.” He asked, “What do you mean?” They replied, “They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, yet they give charity while we do not, and they free slaves while we do not.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I not teach you something that will enable you to catch up with those who have preceded you, outstrip those who come after you, and leave none superior to you except one who does the same as you?” They said, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “After every prayer say Subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah), Allāhu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), and Al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times each.”
The poor Emigrants later returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Our brothers who possess wealth heard what we have done and they have done the same.” He replied, “That is Allah’s favor; He bestows it upon whom He wills.” Agreed upon, and this is the wording recorded by Muslim.
“Duthūr” means large amounts of wealth. Allah knows best.
65 – Chapter: Remembrance of Death and Limiting Earthly Expectations
Allah the Exalted says: “Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has indeed triumphed, and the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:185)
