water.” He then sent word to another wife, and she answered the same; indeed, every one of them said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, I have nothing except water.” The Prophet ﷺ thereupon said, “Who will host this man tonight?” A man of the Ansar replied, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” He took him home and said to his wife, “Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” In another wording he said to her, “Do you have anything (to serve)?” She replied, “No, nothing except the food of my children.” He said, “Occupy them with something, and when they ask for supper put them to bed; when our guest enters, extinguish the lamp and make him think that we are eating.” They sat, the guest ate, and the couple passed the night hungry. 571 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While we were on a journey with the Prophet ﷺ, a man came riding his mount, looking to his right and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever has surplus riding-gear (3) should give it to one who has none, and whoever has surplus provisions should give them to one who lacks provisions.” He went on enumerating categories of wealth until we thought that none of us had any right to keep any surplus. (4) Narrated by Muslim.
