from me while I am unwilling to give it, except that Allah will bless for him whatever I have given.” Reported by Muslim.
534 – Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAwf ibn Mālik al-Ashjaʿī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—nine, or eight, or seven of us—when he said, “Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?” As we had only recently pledged, we replied, “We have already pledged to you, O Messenger of Allah.” Then he said, “Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?” So we stretched out our hands and said, “We have already pledged to you, O Messenger of Allah; on what basis do you wish us to pledge?” He answered, “That you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, that you perform the five prayers, and that you obey Allah,” then he murmured a light word, “and that you do not ask people for anything.” I later saw some of that group whose whip would fall from his hand, yet he would not ask anyone to pass it to him. Reported by Muslim.
535 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “A person will go on begging until he meets Allah the Exalted with not a shred of flesh left on his face.” Agreed upon.
“A muzʿah”—with ḍammah on the mīm, sukun on the zāy, and an un-dotted ʿayn—means “a piece.”
536 – He (Ibn ʿUmar) also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while standing on the pulpit speaking about charity and refraining from begging, said: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that asks.” Agreed upon.
537 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever asks of people merely to accumulate wealth(1) is in fact asking for live coals; let him take little of them or much.” Reported by Muslim.
538 – Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Begging is but a scratch with which a man gouges his own face—unless he asks of a ruler(2) or asks concerning a matter he cannot do without.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: A sound and authentic hadith.
