the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a campaign. We were six men sharing a single camel that we rode in turns; our feet became blistered(1)—my own feet among them—and my toenails fell off. We therefore wrapped strips of cloth around our feet, and for that reason the expedition was called Dhāt al-Riqāʿ (the Raid of the Ragged Cloths), after the pieces of cloth we bound to our feet. Abū Burdah said: Abū Mūsā related this report, then grew uneasy about it and remarked, “Why did I go and mention it?”—as though he disliked disclosing any of his deeds. Agreed upon.
531 – ʿAmr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was once brought some wealth—or prisoners of war—and he distributed it, giving some men shares while leaving out others. Word reached him that those who had been left out felt resentment. He praised and glorified Allah and then said: “To proceed: by Allah, I give to one man and leave another, yet the one I leave is dearer to me than the one to whom I give. I bestow gifts upon certain people because of what I perceive in their hearts of anxiety and alarm, while I entrust other people to what Allah has placed in their hearts of self-sufficiency and goodness. Among them is ʿAmr ibn Taghlib.” ʿAmr ibn Taghlib said, “By Allah, I would not trade these words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a herd of red camels.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
“Halaʿ” is the most intense form of panic; some say it means fretfulness.
532 – Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Start with those whom you support. The best charity is what is given while one is independently well-off. Whoever seeks to keep his dignity, Allah will grant him dignity, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will enrich him.” Agreed upon.
This is al-Bukhārī’s wording; Muslim’s version is shorter.
533 – Abū Sufyān Ṣakhr ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Do not persistently beg(2); for, by Allah, none of you will ask me for anything such that his very request draws it out for him…”
