ladle it out. Al-miqdaḥah is the serving ladle. The verb taghiṭṭu means that it gave off a gurgling sound as it boiled, and Allah knows best.
526 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Abu Talhah said to Umm Sulaym, “I have just heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sounding weak; I can sense hunger in it. Do you have anything (for him)?” She replied, “Yes.” She produced some barley loaves, then took a scarf (1) of hers, wrapped part of it around the bread, slipped it under my garment and covered me with the rest, and sent me off to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
I went and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in the mosque with the people around him. I stood before them and he said, “Did Abu Talhah send you?” I answered, “Yes.” He asked, “With food?” I replied, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “Rise.” They all set off, and I hurried on ahead of them until I reached Abu Talhah and informed him. Abu Talhah exclaimed, “Umm Sulaym, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has arrived with the people and we have nothing with which to feed them!” She said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
Abu Talhah went out and met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; the Prophet ﷺ came with him until they entered (the house). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Bring what you have, Umm Sulaym.” She produced the bread, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that it be crumbled. Umm Sulaym then squeezed over it a small skin (2) of clarified butter, turning it into a relish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounced over it whatever Allah willed him to say, and then said, “Admit ten (men).” Ten were admitted; they ate to their fill and left. He said, “Admit ten more,” and they were admitted, ate, and left. Again he said, “Admit ten more,” and this continued until everyone present had eaten and was satisfied; they were seventy or eighty men in all. Agreed upon.
In another wording: people kept entering ten at a time and leaving ten at a time until none remained who had not entered and eaten his fill; afterwards he collected the dish (3) and it was exactly as it had been before they had eaten from it.
