Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

and ten more men—thirteen in all—and seated them in the socket of its eye. He then took one of its ribs, set it upright, saddled the largest camel we had, and the camel walked underneath it. We provisioned ourselves with its meat, cutting off strips to dry. When we reached Madinah we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said, “It is sustenance that Allah has brought forth for you. Do you have any of its meat so that you may feed us?” We sent some of it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ate from it. Narrated by Muslim.

al-jirāb: a well-known leather bag, pronounced with either a kasrah or a fatḥah on the jīm, the kasrah being more eloquent. The word namuṣṣuhā has the mīm with fatḥah. al-khabat: the leaves of a tree that camels eat. al-kathīb: a mound of sand. al-waqbu, with an open wāw, a silent qāf, and a single bāʾ, is the eye-socket. al-qilāl: large jars. al-fidr, with kasrah on the fāʾ and fatḥah on the dāl, means “pieces.” raḥala al-baʿīr, with a light ḥāʾ, means “he put a saddle on the camel.” al-wushāʾiq, with shīn and qāf, refers to meat sliced for drying. Allah knows best.

524 – Asmāʾ bint Yazīd (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “The cuff of the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ shirt reached the ruḍugh.” Abu Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī narrated this, and al-Tirmidhī said: “A good (ḥasan) ḥadith.” (1)

al-ruḍugh, with ṣād—and al-rusgh, with sīn as well—is the joint between the hand and the forearm (the wrist).

525 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “On the Day of the Trench we were digging, and a very hard boulder blocked our way. They went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘A hard boulder has appeared in the trench.’ He replied, ‘I will go down.’ He rose—his stomach bound with a stone—and we had gone three days without tasting any food. The Prophet ﷺ took the pickaxe, struck the boulder, and it crumbled into loose sand, like a soft dune. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, may I go home?’ I then said to my wife, ‘I have noticed something with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; there is nothing…’” (2)

(1) I have noted that the chain contains a weak narrator; see al-Daifah, no. 2458. – N – (2) That is: we do not eat anything from it.
