and the striped mantle; if he is given he is content, and if he is not given he is displeased.” Reported by al-Bukhari.
473 – He (may Allah be pleased with him) also said: “I have seen seventy of the People of the Ṣuffah – not one of them wore a cloak. Each had nothing but a waist-wrapper or a piece of cloth that he had tied around his neck. Some reached halfway down the shins, others reached the ankles, and each would grasp it with his hand so that his private parts would not be exposed.” Reported by al-Bukhari.
474 – He further narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The present world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the unbeliever.” Reported by Muslim.
475 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of my shoulder (1) and said, “Live in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller on the road.” Ibn ʿUmar used to say, “When night falls, do not expect to live until morning, and when morning comes, do not expect to live until evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death.” Reported by al-Bukhari.
They said in explaining this ḥadīth: its meaning is that you must not incline to the world or take it as a homeland, nor should you entertain hopes of long life in it or devote great care to it. Take from it only what a stranger away from his homeland would take, and occupy yourself in it only with what would occupy a traveller intent on returning to his family. Success comes only from Allah.
476 – Abū al-ʿAbbās Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me.” He replied, “Renounce the world and Allah will love you; renounce what people possess and people will love you.”
